----------------------------------------------

#3. Virus Alert for Smitfraud an Adware Program.

----------------------------------------------
#4. Is Spyware Illegal Under Existing Laws?

The fact that Eliot Spitzer, the attorney general of New York State, filed suit last month against an alleged spyware company has been widely reported. But what everyone seems to have missed in these reports is how Spitzer's case managed to get to court -- despite the fact that New York has no actual law against spyware.

(You may need to copy and paste this link if you're using hotmail, msn, aol or some other mail services.)

----------------------------------------------
#5. Reconnaissance worms on the way.

James Kay, the chief technology officer at e-mail security company Blackspider Technologies, said Friday that vulnerability assessment worms are quite rare at the moment. However, their number will probably increase as virus writers focus their attacks more carefully and try to avoid detection, he said.

----------------------------------------------
#2. Spammers and Phishers Create Comprehensive Consumer Profiles.

By automatically attacking hundreds of Web sites, spammers and phishers can generate a detailed consumer profile from any email address, including the owner's place of residence, hobbies, political views, purchasing preferences and health information, and then use this information for targeted spamming and phishing attacks.

----------------------------------------------
#3. Easy check fraud technique.

Armed with just a checking account number and bank routing number, criminals can create checks at whim, experts and law enforcement authorities say. In fact, as the Urban Age Institute found out, at least one Internet site makes the process even easier.

Most Americans who use the internet have little idea how vulnerable they are to
abuse by online and offline marketers and how the information they provide can
be used to exploit them.

This alert was sent to the Alh Webmaster Alerts Mailing List on behalf of www.the-alh.com on 01 Jun 2005

7 VIRUS ALERTS-ADVISORIES-RECALLS.

#1. Recalls.

From Consumer Affairs.Com. It's important to stay up to date on recalls. All too often, consumers don't learn of a recall until it's too late, according to a recent investigation by Consumers Union. So check back here often, or subscribe to our free newsletter for a weekly update of important recalls.

To view this ALERT / ADVISORY / RECALL online, use the following link: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/recalls/recalls.htm

#2. 900 million messages a day carrying some sort of malicious code.

-Increasing numbers of messages infected with malware - Oxygen3 24h-365d, by Panda Software http://www.pandasoftware.com

May 30, 2005 - The Californian market research company Radicati Group has presented a series of statistics about e-mail and messaging systems and the security problems that affect these services. A summary of the survey is available at:
http://www.radicati.com/cgi-local/brochure.pl?pub_id=497&subscr=&back_link=/reports/single.shtml.

Perhaps one of the most alarming conclusions of the report is that the number of messages carrying some sort of malicious code in 2005 has increased to 900 million messages a day. And the forecasts are even more worrying, as this number is expected to grow to 4200 million infected messages a day by 2009.

The study also concludes that the number of email users around the world will grow at a rate of 7% annually over the next four years, from 683 million users in 2005 to approximately 930 million in 2009. In 2005, there are a total of 381 million active mailboxes in Europe from a total of 1196 million in the whole world. Each European user has an average of 1.9 mail accounts.

The majority of malware is designed to spread either through email or across P2P networks. In 2005, 86% of malware used email as a means of spreading, while 49% used P2P networks. In 2005, email is expected to represent 53% of all corporate mail and 74% of consumer email traffic. In total, spam will make up 57% of the world's email traffic.

Given these statistics, the installation of systems to protect against malware is a necessity at all levels, from large corporate networks to home user systems.

#3. More Bagle, Mytob worms.

A bunch of new offshoots of the Bagle and Mytob worms are spreading.

Three new iterations of Bagle, released at one-hour intervals, popped up on Tuesday, said Maksym Schipka, a senior antivirus researcher at MessageLabs. About 70 variants of the mass-mailing computer virus have been reported since it first appeared in January 2004.

Mytob, like Bagle, is generating new offspring. It is a malicious worm that installs a backdoor and uses its own e-mail engine to forward itself to addresses that it gathers from infected computers.

#4. Able Labs Recalls All Its Generic Drugs.

Able says the company has serious concerns that the recalled drugs were not produced according to quality assurance standards. The company has ceased all production and said its chairman and CEO will resign and withdrew financial guidance.

"In the meantime, the Agency recommends that people who have been taking drugs produced by this firm speak with their health care provider or pharmacist to obtain a replacement drug product. Consumers should continue taking the medication until they have spoken with their health care provider. In many cases the risk of suddenly stopping needed medication before getting replacement drugs may outweigh the risk of continuing to use the recalled products," Glavin said.

The list below provides the names of the recalled drugs and their imprint codes. Imprints are marks (usually letters and numbers) found on the surfaces of drugs. If you have one of the drugs listed below with one of the corresponding imprint codes, your drug is covered by the Able Laboratories recall.

#5. Public Utilities Commission (PUC) investigating MCI's billing practices.

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is investigating MCI's billing practices after receiving hundreds of complaints from consumers who claim they were charged a "minimum usage fee" even though they are not MCI customers.

The problem is not confined to California. ConsumerAffairs.Com has received complaints from consumers nationwide who have experienced similar problems.

#6. Disability Insurance: A Broken Promise.

With major corporations slashing or withdrawing health care benefits from salary packages, cutting pension benefits and practicing blatant age discrimination when searching for employees, it's a tough time to be an employee, even if you're healthy. For those who have suffered injuries or become disabled, the consequences can be catastrophic.

At its most basic, disability insurance is coverage intended to provide 45 to 60 percent of gross income to workers who lose their wages due to a debilitating injury or illness.

#7. Study Suggests Pain Reliever, Breast Cancer Link.

Researchers think women who use aspirin, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) on a regular basis could increase their risks of breast cancer. An account of the study - the first to establish such a link - appears in the latest issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

2 Alerts - Organised crime, malware, and Ransomed files.

This alert was sent to the Alh Webmaster Alerts Mailing List on behalf of www.the-alh.com on 25 May 2005

2 Alerts - Organised crime, malware, and Ransomed files.

#1. Alert - Organised crime and malware on your PC.
#2. UPDATE. 2nd Alert (Today) - Malware Trojan digitally encrypts files and asks for a ransom.

----------------------------------------------
#1. Alert - Organised crime and malware on your PC.

Stealth virus warning sounded again.

Virus authors are choosing not to create global epidemics--such as Melissa or Blaster--because that distracts them from their core business of creating and selling botnets, according to antivirus experts.

Instead of trying to create viruses and worms that infect as many computers as possible, malware authors are instead trying to infect 5,000 or 10,000 computers at a time to create personalized zombie armies.

#2. UPDATE. 2nd Alert (Today) - Malware Trojan digitally encrypts files and asks for a ransom.

This alert was received from PANDASOFTWARE.COM http://www.pandasoftware.com

PandaLabs has recently reported the appearance of a type of malware that encrypts files on the infected computer and then asks for a fee in order to release these files. This is a new type
of behavior, rarely seen until now, and to which the FBI in the United States are now alert.

The malware in question, Trj.PGPCoder.A, is a Trojan, and as is usual in these cases, cannot propagate by itself. Once installed on a computer, it creates two registry keys: one to ensure it is run on every system startup, and the second to monitor the progress of the Trojan in the infected computer, counting the number of files that have been analyzed by the malicious code.

Once it has been run, the Trojan embarks on its mission, which is to encrypt, using a digital encryption key, all the files it finds on computer drives with extensions corresponding to those listed in its code. These extensions include DOC (Microsoft Word documents), HTML (web pages), JPG (images), XLS (Microsoft Excel spreadsheets), ZIP and RAR (two common compressed file formats).

The blackmail is completed with the Trojan dropping a text file in each directory, with instructions to the victim of what to do. An email address is supplied through which users are supposed to request for their files to be released after paying a ransom of $200.

To prevent infection from Trj.PGPCoder.A or other malicious code, Panda Software advises all users to keep their antivirus software up-to-date.

=============================================
Alh Webmaster: CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING TO HAVE ACCESS TO VITAL FILES IN AN EMERGENCY.
This will "STICK-IT" TO ANY HAIRBALL TRYING TO GET YOU TO PAY A RANSOM. Paying ransom is no obligation to them to release your property!

1. Send vital files to a "Special secret e-mail address". These files should be vital files ONLY. If this mail account has encryption, so much the better.

2. Keep copies of vital files on an old "extra" off-line computer (from a yard/garage sale, PC repair shop, pawn shop, secondhand store, or where-ever) with the phone connection plugged or broken (to prevent any attempt to go online). With no online capability the PC is rendered safe from malware, spyware and virus attacks.

3. If you have a website, keep copies of important, NOT VITAL files on the site under password protection.

VITAL files: Any files with account information, usernames & passwords. Also any files that cannot be easily replaced.
IMPORTANT files: Files that contain important information to you, but worthless to others.

----------------------------------------------
#3. Be Wary of Pre-Paid Heating Fuel Contracts.

"Unfortunately, we have seen several cases in recent years where consumers have eagerly signed on to pre-paid plans that promised lower fuel costs, only to be disappointed and sometimes left out in the cold by companies that were unable to meet the terms of the agreements," Rodriguez said.

(You may need to copy and paste this link if you're using hotmail, msn, aol or some other mail services.)

----------------------------------------------
#4. FDA Warns Against abuse of dextromethorphan (DXM).

The Food and Drug Administration is concerned about the abuse of dextromethorphan (DXM), a synthetically produced ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough and cold remedies. The concern was ramped up following five recently reported deaths of teenagers that may be associated with the consumption of powdered DXM sold in capsules.

DXM abuse, though not a new phenomenon, has developed into a disturbing new trend which involves the sale of pure DXM in powdered form. This pure DXM is often encapsulated by the "dealer" and offered for street use.

----------------------------------------------
#5. Medical Aid Scam.

MyFreeMedicine.com aired television advertisements in Arkansas that encouraged viewers to call a toll-free number to obtain help in getting medications at little or no cost. The company claimed to be acting in conjunction with pharmaceutical companies in helping people who qualified for the service.

According to Beebe, prescription-assistance forms are usually available in doctors' offices and can be filled out by patients for free. Some non-profit groups, including Area Agencies on Aging and the Prescription Assistance Line for Seniors (PALS), also offer these programs for free or for small processing fees ($5 or less), which often include assistance in completing the necessary paperwork.

----------------------------------------------
#6. spread of 'toxic' MRSA.

Toxin-producing MRSA [methicillin-resistant _Staphylococcus aureus_] strains similar to the one that killed Richard Campbell-Smith, an 18-year-old Royal Marine trainee, are already a widespread medical problem in the United States and account for the majority of Staphylococcus aureus infections in some areas.

Campbell-Smith, a fit, young recruit, developed necrotising pneumonia and died two days after a cut on his leg that he sustained in training became infected with an MRSA [methicillin-resistant _Staphylococcus aureus_] strain that produces the Panton-Valentine toxin, an inquest heard this week.

#1. Remote denial of service in Yahoo! Messenger.

From: http://www.pandasoftware.com
Madrid, May 19, 2005 - A vulnerability has been reported in Yahoo!
Messenger that could lead to a denial of service, with remote attackers being able to disconnect users from Chat sessions.

The problem lies in the way that Yahoo! Messenger processes arguments in YMSGR: URL handler links. An attacker modifying the links with certain characters after the colon could create malformed packets to send to Yahoo! YMSG servers. When these packets are sent, Yahoo! will immediately disconnect users from the chat session.

The problem affects Yahoo! Messenger versions 5.0 and 6.0 and all details have been published along with proof of concepts with malicious urls that could disconnect a user.
