Whirlpool is recalling about 529,000 Kitchenaid Coffeemakers. An internal electrical component of the coffeemaker can overheat and ignite, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

#5. Report: Consumers Vulnerable to Profiling, Price Discrimination.

A new report released by the Annenberg Public Policy Center shows that consumers are largely unaware of how their personal information is used by businesses, and they object to behavioral profiling, price discrimination, and the purchase of their personal information from database companies.

The report also found that the respondents incorrectly believe that "laws prevent online and offline stores from selling their personal information," and that "stores cannot charge them different prices based on what they know about them."

May 30, 2005 - The Californian market research company Radicati Group has presented a series of statistics about e-mail and messaging systems and the security problems that affect these services. A summary of the survey is available at:

Perhaps one of the most alarming conclusions of the report is that the number of messages carrying some sort of malicious code in 2005 has increased to 900 million messages a day. And the forecasts are even more worrying, as this number is expected to grow to 4200 million infected messages a day by 2009.

The study also concludes that the number of email users around the world will grow at a rate of 7% annually over the next four years, from 683 million users in 2005 to approximately 930 million in 2009. In 2005, there are a total of 381 million active mailboxes in Europe from a total of 1196 million in the whole world. Each European user has an average of 1.9 mail accounts.

The majority of malware is designed to spread either through email or across P2P networks. In 2005, 86% of malware used email as a means of spreading, while 49% used P2P networks. In 2005, email is expected to represent 53% of all corporate mail and 74% of consumer email traffic. In total, spam will make up 57% of the world's email traffic.

Given these statistics, the installation of systems to protect against malware is a necessity at all levels, from large corporate networks to home user systems.

A bunch of new offshoots of the Bagle and Mytob worms are spreading.

Three new iterations of Bagle, released at one-hour intervals, popped up on Tuesday, said Maksym Schipka, a senior antivirus researcher at MessageLabs. About 70 variants of the mass-mailing computer virus have been reported since it first appeared in January 2004.

Mytob, like Bagle, is generating new offspring. It is a malicious worm that installs a backdoor and uses its own e-mail engine to forward itself to addresses that it gathers from infected computers.

#4. Able Labs Recalls All Its Generic Drugs.

Able says the company has serious concerns that the recalled drugs were not produced according to quality assurance standards. The company has ceased all production and said its chairman and CEO will resign and withdrew financial guidance.

"In the meantime, the Agency recommends that people who have been taking drugs produced by this firm speak with their health care provider or pharmacist to obtain a replacement drug product. Consumers should continue taking the medication until they have spoken with their health care provider. In many cases the risk of suddenly stopping needed medication before getting replacement drugs may outweigh the risk of continuing to use the recalled products," Glavin said.

#2. UPDATE. 2nd Alert (Today) - Malware Trojan digitally encrypts files and asks for a ransom.

This alert was received from PANDASOFTWARE.COM http://www.pandasoftware.com

PandaLabs has recently reported the appearance of a type of malware that encrypts files on the infected computer and then asks for a fee in order to release these files. This is a new type
of behavior, rarely seen until now, and to which the FBI in the United States are now alert.

The malware in question, Trj.PGPCoder.A, is a Trojan, and as is usual in these cases, cannot propagate by itself. Once installed on a computer, it creates two registry keys: one to ensure it is run on every system startup, and the second to monitor the progress of the Trojan in the infected computer, counting the number of files that have been analyzed by the malicious code.

Once it has been run, the Trojan embarks on its mission, which is to encrypt, using a digital encryption key, all the files it finds on computer drives with extensions corresponding to those listed in its code. These extensions include DOC (Microsoft Word documents), HTML (web pages), JPG (images), XLS (Microsoft Excel spreadsheets), ZIP and RAR (two common compressed file formats).

The blackmail is completed with the Trojan dropping a text file in each directory, with instructions to the victim of what to do. An email address is supplied through which users are supposed to request for their files to be released after paying a ransom of $200.

To prevent infection from Trj.PGPCoder.A or other malicious code, Panda Software advises all users to keep their antivirus software up-to-date.

Hazard: The chair’s safety lock can fail, allowing the chair to collapse or fold unexpectedly. Children’s fingers can become caught or entrapped in the hinge and slot areas of the chair, posing a pinch or cut hazard. This can cause severe lacerations and finger tip amputations to children’s fingers.

Sold At: Hardware, discount department, toy, grocery and drug stores nationwide from September 2002 through May 2005 for about $10 individually and for about $45 for a set.

#4. FDA Warns Against abuse of dextromethorphan (DXM).

The Food and Drug Administration is concerned about the abuse of dextromethorphan (DXM), a synthetically produced ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough and cold remedies. The concern was ramped up following five recently reported deaths of teenagers that may be associated with the consumption of powdered DXM sold in capsules.

DXM abuse, though not a new phenomenon, has developed into a disturbing new trend which involves the sale of pure DXM in powdered form. This pure DXM is often encapsulated by the "dealer" and offered for street use.

#5. Medical Aid Scam.

MyFreeMedicine.com aired television advertisements in Arkansas that encouraged viewers to call a toll-free number to obtain help in getting medications at little or no cost. The company claimed to be acting in conjunction with pharmaceutical companies in helping people who qualified for the service.

According to Beebe, prescription-assistance forms are usually available in doctors' offices and can be filled out by patients for free. Some non-profit groups, including Area Agencies on Aging and the Prescription Assistance Line for Seniors (PALS), also offer these programs for free or for small processing fees ($5 or less), which often include assistance in completing the necessary paperwork.

Toxin-producing MRSA [methicillin-resistant _Staphylococcus aureus_] strains similar to the one that killed Richard Campbell-Smith, an 18-year-old Royal Marine trainee, are already a widespread medical problem in the United States and account for the majority of Staphylococcus aureus infections in some areas.

Campbell-Smith, a fit, young recruit, developed necrotising pneumonia and died two days after a cut on his leg that he sustained in training became infected with an MRSA [methicillin-resistant _Staphylococcus aureus_] strain that produces the Panton-Valentine toxin, an inquest heard this week.

Madrid, May 19, 2005 - A vulnerability has been reported in Yahoo!
Messenger that could lead to a denial of service, with remote attackers being able to disconnect users from Chat sessions.

The problem lies in the way that Yahoo! Messenger processes arguments in YMSGR: URL handler links. An attacker modifying the links with certain characters after the colon could create malformed packets to send to Yahoo! YMSG servers. When these packets are sent, Yahoo! will immediately disconnect users from the chat session.

The problem affects Yahoo! Messenger versions 5.0 and 6.0 and all details have been published along with proof of concepts with malicious urls that could disconnect a user.
