#1. Import/Export Scam Circulating via E-Mail.

Yet another form of Internet scam is circulating via e-mail. This one's called the Import/Export scam and while it takes several forms, it generally asks recipients for help in clearing checks from overseas.

#2. Recall of Belkin Bluetooth GPS Navigation System Batteries.

Belkin is recalling about 10,000 Li-Polymer batterys pack sold with its Bluetooth Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation System. The battery can overheat, expand, and possibly rupture, creating an explosion or fire hazard.

Name of Product: Hi-Capacity® rechargeable notebook computer batteries

Units: About 10,000

Hazard: An internal short can cause the battery cells to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Battery-Biz® has received six reports of batteries overheating and melting.

Sold At: Various national and regional resellers, retail stores and online stores from January 2004 through May 2005 for between $70 and $199.

#4. Recall of Fireworks.

Name of Product: Bat Out of Hell and Powder House fireworks

Units: About 9,000 units

Importer: American Promotional Events Inc., of Florence, Ala.

Hazard: These fireworks devices could unexpectedly tip over during use, posing a serious injury hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: None.

Sold At: Fireworks retailers, including display stands and tents in states permitting the sale of consumer fireworks, from May 2005 through June 2005 for about $20.

#5. "SpyKiller" Anti-Spyware Scam.

The FTC alleges defendants sent pop-up and e-mail messages informing consumers that their computers had been remotely “scanned” and that spyware had been “detected” even though defendants had not performed any such scans. The defendants’ marketing materials urged consumers to access the SpyKiller Web site to get a “free scan” for spyware.
