#1. Virus Alert for Trojan Horse Backdoor.Nibu.K.

Backdoor.Nibu.K opens a back door Trojan horse on a compromised computer. It also runs a keylogger, periodically sending the stolen information to a predetermined email address.

Name of Product: Bunn® home coffeemakers

Units: About 1.75 million.

Manufacturer: Bunn-O-Matic Corp., of Springfield, Ill.

Hazard: The coffeemaker’s plastic pour-in bowl and lid can melt or ignite due to an electrical failure, posing a burn and fire hazard to consumers

Sold At: Department and hardware stores nationwide between February 2001 and August 2004 for about $100.

#3. Virus Alert for Smitfraud an Adware Program.

This program changes the Windows Desktop to a picture that simulates a Windows fatal error, warning users that they have been affected by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c. These kind of messages attempt to trick users into purchasing the fake antispyware program.

The fact that Eliot Spitzer, the attorney general of New York State, filed suit last month against an alleged spyware company has been widely reported. But what everyone seems to have missed in these reports is how Spitzer's case managed to get to court -- despite the fact that New York has no actual law against spyware.

#5. Reconnaissance worms on the way.

James Kay, the chief technology officer at e-mail security company Blackspider Technologies, said Friday that vulnerability assessment worms are quite rare at the moment. However, their number will probably increase as virus writers focus their attacks more carefully and try to avoid detection, he said.
